Tony Allison was born in 1946 in Manitoba, Canada, the same province that produced notable Canadian artists Edwin Holgate and David Milne. Working primarily as an etching artist and painter, Allison has spent his career based in Flin Flon, Manitoba, where he continues to live and work as an independent artist.
Between 1969 and 1978, Allison was particularly active in exhibiting his work, with numerous solo exhibitions and commissions throughout Canada and the United States. His work favors abstract compositions, emphasizing color and geometric patterns. He has described his approach to painting as spontaneous and expressive, working without predetermined outcomes and allowing each piece to develop "in the moment."
Allison's work is held in several permanent collections, including the Government of Manitoba, the University of Manitoba, and the Clement Greenberg Collection in New York. Beyond his own artistic practice, he played a significant role in encouraging his godfather to begin painting at age 68, providing art materials and support that helped launch the career of the artist known as Maka.
