Laureat Marois Biography

RCA

Lauréat Marois was born on April 15, 1949, in Saint-Éphrem-de-Beauce, Quebec. He moved to Quebec City in 1967, where he has lived and worked since. He graduated from the Quebec School of Fine Arts in 1971 with a degree in graphic communications, focusing on silkscreening, and obtained his teaching license in fine arts from Université Laval in 1972.

Marois served as a lecturer at Université du Québec à Chicoutimi from 1972 to 2024 and at Université Laval from 1997 to 2020, teaching silkscreening, drawing, and painting.

From 1972 to 1982, Marois worked primarily in silkscreen, participating in numerous biennials and exhibitions throughout Canada and internationally. He received several awards for printmaking between 1977 and 1980. Since 1982, he has focused on painting and public art works under Quebec's art and architecture integration policy.

Marois was a guest artist at painting symposiums in Baie-Saint-Paul in 1988 and 2001. He was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in 1992. He returned to printmaking from 1993 to 1996 and received the Videre Award of Excellence in 1994 for his contributions to Quebec culture.

In 1996, Marois represented Canada during a two-month residency at Kawaguchi Art Station in Japan. He received the Collection Loto-Québec Award at the 1999 Biennale du dessin, de l'estampe et du papier-matière du Québec and the Videre Reconnaissance award in 2006 from Quebec City's Manif d'Art.

Marois's work focuses on renewed figurativism with nature as a central element. His works are held in many Canadian art museum and public gallery collections, as well as Canadian and American corporate collections.
