Brian Marion

1960 - 2011

Brian Marion was a Saulteaux and Cree artist born in 1960 in Kamsack, Saskatchewan. Also known as Little Hummingbird or Little Thunderbird, he worked primarily in acrylic on paper and silkscreen.

In 1975, at age 15, Marion began a nine-year apprenticeship with Norval Morrisseau, founder of the Woodland School of painting. Morrisseau considered Marion his spiritual son and protégé. In 1986, Marion had his first major exhibition alongside Morrisseau at First Canadian Place in Toronto, which launched his career. He continued to share the traditional teachings of his mentor throughout his life.

In 1994, Marion was chosen to represent Canada at the 50th anniversary of D-Day in Normandy, France. His work has been shown in Milan and at the Canadian embassy in Chicago, and is held in private and public collections including that of former Prime Minister Jean Chrétien. He died in 2011.
