Robert Archambeau was born on April 18, 1933, in Toledo, Ohio. He dropped out of high school at age 17 to join the U.S. Marines, serving for four years before pursuing higher education. He earned his BFA from Bowling Green State University in 1959 and his MFA at the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University in 1964.

After teaching for four years at the Rhode Island School of Design, Archambeau moved to Winnipeg in 1968 to join the faculty of the University of Manitoba's School of Art. He taught ceramics there for 23 years until his retirement in 1991, influencing students including Grace Nickel, Kathryne Koop, and Alex Yeung. He became Professor Emeritus in 2004 and continued working in his studio at the university until his death.

Archambeau worked with clay for over 60 years, creating wood-fired stoneware vessels including jars, vases, teapots, and bowls. His work was influenced by Asian ceramic techniques and philosophy, particularly the Japanese mingei tradition. He lived and worked in Japan, collaborating with artists Akio Takamori and Jun Kaneko, and visited artisanal potteries in Japan, Korea, and China during the 1980s.

He maintained studios at the University of Manitoba and in Bissett, Manitoba. He threw pots on the wheel and fired them in wood-burning kilns at high temperatures to achieve speckled and mottled surfaces in earth tones. The bronze lidded jar became one of his signature forms. Following mingei philosophy, he rarely signed his ceramics.

Archambeau received the Governor General's Award in Visual and Media Arts in 2003, becoming the first Manitoba artist to receive Canada's highest artistic honor. In 2008, the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts bestowed a lifetime achievement award upon him. In 2014, he received the Manitoba Arts Council's Award of Distinction.

His work is held in collections including the Winnipeg Art Gallery, the Gardiner Museum in Toronto, and the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Gatineau. The Winnipeg Art Gallery organized multiple solo exhibitions of his work. Archambeau died on April 25, 2022.
