1927 - 2024

Duncan De Kergommeaux was a Canadian painter and educator whose career spanned over seven decades. Born in Premier, British Columbia, he studied at the Banff School of Fine Arts and with Jan Zack in Victoria. His artistic style evolved throughout his career, moving between abstraction and representation. He is recognized for his grid and geometric paintings, as well as his landscape and cow series.

A significant figure in the development of the Ottawa art scene, De Kergommeaux established the Blue Barn Gallery and the Lofthouse Galleries in the 1960s, providing venues for contemporary art. He was also instrumental in founding the permanent art collection at Carleton University. His role as an educator was extensive; he taught at Carleton University and was a professor and the Head of the Studio Art Department at the University of Western Ontario from 1970 to 1993.
